Periods of Extreme Cold
From time to time, the National Weather Service (NWS) predicts periods of extreme cold weather and frigid conditions. When the NWS issues these forecast, the Schuylkill County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) will provide notification to county level agencies, local faith based organizations, advocacy groups and non-profit organizations to determine if any are taking extraordinary steps to provide sheltering for the homeless or additional outreach or services to clients or residents living alone. As that information becomes available, media releases, social media updates and the PA211 system will be utilized to inform the public.
In such conditions, Emergency Management may request the Commissioners of the County of Schuylkill to do a “Code Blue” declaration to raise awareness within the area. All residents are reminded to be extremely careful when utilizing supplemental heating sources. County residents are urged to check on their elderly neighbors and pets during periods of extremely cold weather.
